Norway

A short while ago, by complete coincidence, on the same day two blippers sent us photographs to represent Norway in our 'album' of locations mentioned by Lorna Lloyd in her Diary of the war  (previously blipped in the the LornaL journal). We decided to blip two of them.

The main picture is a beautiful shot of Åndalsnes that was kindly supplied by esiuol. The extra from Munroist4113 - a regular contributor to the LornaLPodcast journal - shows German fortifications in the fishing village of Bud. Thank you esiuol and Munroist4113!

Lorna mentions Norway in her war diary several times in Spring 1940. First, on March 13th, she is critical of the country (alongside Sweden) for refusing to allow allied forces to sail an expeditionary force to Finland (by that time invaded by Russia). Listen to Lorna's great-great niece actress Bethany Ray play her great-great aunt delivering her critical appraisal of Norway's actions in Episode 4 of our podcast series of the Diary of the war

The next month, Lorna charts the German invasion of Norway from April 9th, covering the flight of the Norwegian royal family on April 10th, the organisation of the Norwegian resistance on April 11th, and the landing of British troops in Norway on April 15th. Lorna's last mention of Norway is made on May 8th, when she reports the allied withdrawal from the south of the country. These war diary entries are all covered in Episode 5 of our podcast series of the Diary of the war.

If you haven't heard the podcast series, please do give it a go. We're very proud of the work that went into transforming Lorna's work held in one digital archive (the Blipfoto journal) into another (the podcast series). If this is the first time that you have come across this journal, please find out more about our project in the short summary.

Listed below are many more locations mentioned in Lorna's war diary that we would like to collect for this journal. If you have a photograph(s) of any of the places (that you have not blipped already), please do send it(them) to h.hall@napier.ac.uk.
