Remembrance

I was in the city centre today (my wife’s birthday is coming up soon) and passed by the Scott Monument where poppies are laid out in a variety of forms. There were small wooden crosses, a Poppy Tree, wreaths and these tall poppies laid out in the grass and so on.

While I was there it was announced that the formal ceremony at 11 was being cancelled due to the high winds. The 2 minutes silence would be respected but the ceremony of laying the wreaths etc was cancelled. The announcement caused not just sadness but anger among some including a family that had travelled through from Glasgow.

The winds overnight and this morning were very high and Princes St Gardens were closed. However the ceremony would have been in the lee of the monument. So there must have been health and safety concerns over the trees.

I was in John Lewis by 11 where the whole shop stopped in silence for the 2 minutes. The only noise was the sound of the escalators which kept running. Normally you don’t notice them.
