Kentish scenes in Orkney

This is part of a large mural in the mess hut at the Ness Battery near Stromness. It is believed to be painted by A R Woods who was born in Gravesend in 1877 and died in Deptford in 1950.It is unknown why he ended up in Orkney, maybe on some secret mission but he must have stayed for sometime as the mural is large and impressive.
Other scenes include Romany caravans,an orchard in bloom and a windmill thought to be one in Gravesend.
I was particularly interested as I was born and brought up in Kent and most of my ancestors are from the area.
We had an interesting tour around the battery which is in the process of being restored.Sunny but windy and cold in the buildings with the wind whipping past. They must have been hardy souls in those days and busy defending the Sound of Hoy and the rest of the UK.
