For Sale

This is our 'house next door' except that it is not really next door as this is on the corner and we are quite a bit up the road. When we came to the village Brenda lived here with her husband and her brother Clive. Brenda was very kind to me as I arrived and we were always good neighbours. We did not know her husband very well as he died soon after we arrived, then Brenda and Clive lived at the house and were very much part of the village.

Brenda died during lockdown, although not of Covid, and the whole village lined the roads for the funeral. Clive was not very well and we helped him with shopping and visits to the doctor, but eventually he died and the house was left empty. The only relation is Brenda's son, who lives in West Cumbria, and it took a long time for them to get things sorted so the house could be sold.

It has remained empty for a long time and is still full of stuff. Eventually it was put on the market where it has remained. At one point a 'Sold' sign appeared but this was soon taken down and it remains for sale.

I just can't see how anyone will buy it. The house was originally the Blacksmith's for the village and there is a photo in the village archive of it as such. Brenda lived in the house for a long time, so long that no one can remember who lived in it before. It is tiny, has had a not very well built extension, hardly a bathroom and needs a lot doing to it to update it. There is land behind it but it is sloping and would need digging out if a new extension or even a new building altogether was to be contemplated. There is a very amusing video by the estate agent as he tries to make the house into something it isn't - a lesson in how not to make a video. When we sent the link to our son-in-law he thought it was a spoof! At least we now know what a fantastic village we live in!!!

We wonder what is going to happen to it.
