Erenstein Castle

Just a few miles from my home in the same place where I live we have a beautifully preserved castle.
The castle is still in use as a restaurant and is also often used to make. Wedding pictures

Erenstein Castle was built in the 14th century and consists of two mutually perpendicular, still largely medieval wings are made of Nivelsteiner, a local stone.

The first known inhabitant of Erenstein was Adam Ederen, listed in 1363. Through the Van Gronsveld, Huyn of Amstenrade and Spies Büllesheim Erenstein came in 1707 in the possession of Hendrick Poyck, sheriff of Merkstein. He changed the whole appearance of the castle and built the two round towers on the southern corner of the ring wall and in the middle of the south facade, he also built the chapel. His son, Peter Casper Poyck, provided the castle of a farm. This farm surrounds three sides of the square in front of the castle. In 1725 married Peter Casper Poyck with the daughter of the famous visual artist Gabriel the Grupello (1644-1730). The last years of his life spent in the Grupello by Castle Erenstein. Through him, the castle became significant brand awareness within and outside the Netherlands.

After the French Revolution the castle owned by the Colen brothers came and they sold the castle in 1903 to the Franciscans. The Franciscans expanded the castle with an additional wing, which does not really fit with the whole. Mid-century the castle was owned by the City of Kerkrade and was started in 1962 to 1970 with the restoration. It was restored whole as it is very similar to the period Poyck.
