Palouse #2 Dusty, WA

Here we are in Dusty, WA. I'm on the porch of our wonderful big old farmhouse B and B, run by an amazing farmer's wife/artist/cook/painter from the farm next door who took care of our every need and provided fabulous farm breakfasts and most interesting, informative and entertaining stories. Picked this of the bucking horses running in the field across the road- there is a whole herd of horses bred for bucking that travel to all the rodeos around the area. We also got to watch a brand new less than 24 hr old colt on the farm next door which you will have to see HERE. There are 17 mouser cats that live there as well and 4 2 week old irresistible kittens. 3 pampered cats live in our B and B. In the front of this photo is a bit of a neighbor's wheat field with the leftovers from last years "winter wheat". There are 2 different crops of winter wheat grown here, one sown in the fall or mild winter, that grows and then lies dormant for awhile before growing again in the spring. A different strain is grown in the spring and they are both harvested near to each other in mid July. The field is then left to recover for a year or possibly planted with a nitrogen enricher. But they used to be tilled under so the unused field looked neat and tidy, until recently when the newest theory is to leave a bit of the stubble. Less dust this way too! Well, afer we heard this, before dinner today, a big "harrowing "machine and tractor comes along stirring up great clouds of dust to tidy up this field with a shorter more manicured look. You can see this on the flickr set.

We had a great little hike up Kamich ridge to overlook Idaho and some good flowers , and a good lunch out in the quiet little town of Palouse. It was a treat to not have any internet.
