Eryri

Yet again I’ve failed miserably in my aim to keep photography to a minimum today. Mind you, considering we were driving through Snowdonia to Bangor - the scenic route - I was never going to succeed.

We’re expecting clear blue skies and, fingers crossed, some snow-dusted mountains - and at first it looks as if expectations will be met. The sun shines on the river Conwy’s mirror calm, and mist floats dreamily in a valley bordered by the snow-topped high Carneddau.  And this would be my blip sorted - but of course our journey continues….

But as we journey south into the mountains, clouds gather ominously and the mood changes dramatically.  Looking towards Snowdon from Capel Curig, the mountains almost disappear in cloudburst, all colours cold and muted.

Back into the Ogwen valley, there’s a hint of sun and sky behind the clouds, and snow topped mountains stand majestic above tiny farms, the colours of the landscape revealed once more by the light. And then there’s the massive  jagged outcrop of Tryfan, features emphasised by its icing sugar dusting, towering forbiddingly above the landscape. The wildness of Eryri* at its best.- well at lest until the full force of winter.

So many vastly different views along a relatively short stretch of road it’s impossible to choose …

*Eryri: Welsh for Snowdonia - there’s now a movement to use the Welsh name fir the area and its highest mountain - Yr Wyddfa.
