A shot of our front door evergreen wreath with a sprinkling of BeCasso • Here is the most performed Christmas Song on the Top 25 List: The Christmas Song, also known as Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire, Mel Torme and Robert Wells, 1946 • It was written in July during a heatwave in LA. Torme visited Bob’s house and found a notepad on his piano with some phrases he had written down to help him keep cool. Phrases like: chestnuts roasting/Jack Frost nipping/Yuletide carols/Folks dressed up like eskimos • Torme took these phrases and wrote them into lyrics, then to music • The Nat King Cole Trio first recorded the song in June, 1946. A string section was added to a second recording in August. In 1953 Cole recorded another using a full orchestra conducted by Nelson Riddle. The one that’s considered the definitive recording came in 1961 with a stereophonic version conducted by Ralph Carmichael • The 1946 original was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1974. In 2022 the 1961 version was preserved in the US National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress • Mel Torme did perform the song many times over the years, often adding different first verses • Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
