"Once upon a time there was a girl called Polly Flint, and one day she saw an angel."

Finished revisiting my second novel for the 'Love Blippin' Books' group last night (see below for details of the group). I chose The Secret World of Polly Flint by Helen Cresswell (see extra for my bookplate inside - I used to be in the Puffin Club, which is how I discovered this book).

This is one of my favourite novels from childhood but I've probably not read it for the best part of 40 years. It's extra special because it's set near to where I grew up and Polly Flint is an ordinary little girl from a working class family in a small mining village. But Polly is a bit special - she has her own imaginary world and sees things that other people (especially adults) don't. I always felt an affinity with Polly Flint.

Her father is involved in an accident at the pit and has to be sent away for specialist treatment and Polly goes to live with her Aunt for a few weeks. And that's when all the magic starts to happen FOR REAL.  The adventures take place in Wellow and Rufford Park, which are actual places and very special to me because of this book.

I loved rereading it and found the TV adaptation on YouTube so I'm watching an episode each night :-)

"No one was in the fields
But me and Polly Flint,
When, like a giant across the grass,
The flaming angel went."

It was another beautiful day today so I went up on to the top of the valley and down through Prince of Wales Park (where I photographed my favourite tree) and back along the canal.
