Spring promise

This may look like a long-dead twig but look again - it's the top layer of an espalier heritage apple tree that's almost ready to burst into blossom, given some sun and slightly warmer days. This tree is one of many in the glorious walled garden at Audley End just south of Cambridge. In the next couple of weeks the whole garden will be buzzing with bees, and the soil green with shoots.
