Fettes College

Early starts all round.  BB was playing rugby in Edinburgh and TT had graduation duties.  We all drove in together, in the rain.  We arrived at the rugby pitches where parking was at a premium.  TT got one of the last spaces.  BB headed off for pre-match training, TT headed off to work, and I wandered down to Stockbridge to buy some lunch so that BB could eat it on the way home, as we had to get home quickly, as he was going straight to play football.  Thankfully the rain has gone off.

I got back just after the rugby had started.  They were to be playing two teams, so two short games.  They played well against the first team, which wasn’t reflected in the score.  There was a short break and they headed back on to the pitch for the second game.  The game hadn’t been going on very long when BB made a great tackle, unfortunately he came off badly as he got a bad knock to his head.  Helped by his coach, he came off dazed and confused and collapsed to the ground.  One of the dads ran off to find the paramedic who has been wandering round.   He came back with a first aider, who helped BB to the medical room.  I followed them along and could see that he wasn’t too steady on his feet.  They made him lie down for a while and then he got thoroughly checked over, by which time he was feeling much more like himself.  They diagnosed mild concussion and sent him home to rest.  We stopped to chat with his coach as we were leaving.  He told BB that his tackle was brilliant.  He also told me that when he heard the crack he thought it was BB’s shoulder, unfortunately it was his head. Ouch!

Our journey home took much longer than we had hoped due to horrendous traffic.  At least we didn’t need to get back for football, so we weren’t clock watching.  BB showered and took up residence on the sofa and then TT arrived home.  We had plans to visit friends (hence yesterday’s cooking), so had to decide what we were doing.  BB hadn’t to be left alone, so he came too.  We had a lovely evening catching up with friends and their dogs.  BB was tired, and we probably should have left earlier than we did.  He slept on the drive home and once home he was asleep as soon as his head hit his pillow.  What a day!  I have been reflecting that we were lucky that the incident happened at a private school, with good medical facilities and paramedics on site.  Had it been a home game, I would have been off to A&E.

This is Fettes College.  BB wasn’t playing here – but at one of the other myriad of private schools in the area.
