A day of relentless heavy rain on which I learnt that my waterproof coat isn't waterproof and my wellington boots have a leak. 

Back in the early 1970s my A level European History course stopped at 1914. I thought it was about time I filled in some of the more significant gaps starting with the Russian revolution.
