Boats

Despite having lived in the Lakes for over thirty years, I’ve never been to the Windermere Steamboat Museum, or Windermere Jetty as it is now known, following a complete rebuild a few years ago.
All that changed this afternoon, when I discovered a voucher among the general detritus on the desk that entitled us to 30% off the admission fee to the museum. Only problem was that said voucher expired today. The weather was not conducive to outdoor activities (rain, sleet and 3C temperature), but as trips on the lake were extra anyway, we just thought we’d go and look around the museum and perhaps have a cup of tea and a cake in the cafe.
Very interesting it turned out to be. Lots of historical craft in various stages of seaworthiness, from absolute wrecks being restored to gleaming steam launches that can take you up and down the lake on a warm sunny day. My picture is of some of the racing craft that all competed in the various speed events on Windermere until the introduction of the 10mph limit put an end to those sort of shenanigans in 2005.
I’m glad we went and would quite like to go back on a warmer and sunnier day and take a trip on the lake in one of their beautifully restored boats.
