a lifetime burning

Mrs Blackcap

After the last few dull days it was a delight to be able to get up early and head out to the Avalon nature reserves knowing that the conditions were going to be good.

It was a beautiful morning to be outdoors, if cold.  In addition to seeing a bittern (which I've not featured) I also heard my first cuckoo of the year.

My main today features a female blackcap snacking on ivy berries. If you look you can see her tongue.  The first extra is a reed warbler just visible through last year's reeds.  The final extra is of a flock of Whimbrels in flight - a smaller cousin of the Curlew, and not something I've seen very often.
