‘Old Milestone Reborn’

I spotted this rather incongruously placed milestone today; it reads ‘‘Glasgow 39 Miles, Edinburgh 3 Miles’

It’s in Corstorphine, Edinburgh - on the north side of St. John’s Road (which forms part of the A8 main road out of Edinburgh towards Glasgow).

Corstorphine used to be one of the many villages on the outskirts of the city and was incorporated into Edinburgh in 1920.

I know nothing about it, though I would guess it is probably at least a couple of hundred years old.

I wonder how long it took to travel the 39 miles to Glasgow in those days!
