On Some Days

Mack The Knife

It was a good drive down the Richardson Highway today past the Wrangle Mountains and the high peaks with snow on them were more visible.   We also had real interaction with an authentic guy and his mom.  I am hearing and reading the word authentic a lot.  I think I used to say someone was genuine but I can try something new.  We came to the Klutina River and saw people fishing so we pulled in.  I wasn't sure if we should be there as it looked like a private camp ground.  I spoke to a young boy and he explained about it being fishing time.  He had come from  Anchorage with his family to catch the red salmon or sockeye salmon.  Each fisher person can catch 3 per day.  The forester then engaged in conversation with Mack.  He was filleting the three fish his mom had caught and the two he had landed.  He vacuum packs the fillets on site.  He is an engineer on jet engines for the Airforce.  His mom flies in from Florida to see her son and go fishing.  They stay in a camper.  Harvesting food is a way of life for many Alaskans.  Mack  is confident he will also shoot a moose this autumn and that is a lot of meat to process and put away in the freezer.  The extra is the young boy fishing and the salmon being packed.
