Marjorie's ramblings

Humshaugh First School

It's been a rainy day, on and off.

We watched the tennis and were very disappointed that Ons Jabeur lost the final. Marketa Vondrousova was the better player on the day and nerves played a big part in Ons Jabeur's loss. Sad to see.

This evening I walked down to the bottom of the village to deliver a birthday card to Liz. I saw this notice in a window at the school.

My Dad was an Education Welfare Officer (aka School Board Man, aka kid catcher). He was passionate about children attending school and making the most of the education offered to them. His schools, some in areas of severe social deprivation, had very good attendance.

He was on a bike. If he found a child in the street, he could take them into school. That would not be allowed today.

He used a lot of common sense and good humour to fulfil his role. The notice brought back lots of memories from my childhood. Needless to say, my attendance was very good!
