Paddling is King

In Point Roberts motorboats pulling skiers, wake-boarders, and tubers seems to have become a thing of the past. Motor cruising for pleasure is almost non existent. These boats are now used primarily for fishing and crabbing. There are several reasons for this, but the primary one seems to be the cost of gas.

Kayaks first appeared about twenty years ago and are now common and used by all ages.

Paddleboards were at first a niche, because they required balance . Then people realized it was fine to kneel on them and, more recently, to sit on them. They are now for everyone.

Canoes are a rarity, very seldom seen. This gentleman appeared the evening before last, and went salmon fishing on a choppy sea. Yesterday, he returned and took a crab trap out and came back later to collect it.

All of these scenes are from yesterday. The canoeist is returning to shore on a gray, horizonless morning. Extra #1-two boarders glide slowly by shortly after. Extra # 2- In the late afternoon, the ladies went for a long paddle. ( K. right, JJ centre, our friend Jane left.)

The upshot is that noise from the water has gone down to virtually nothing, and the sound of waves on the shore has returned.
