Eduardo

Standard Maputo street scene at sunset, as I strolled around Avenida Eduardo Mondlane. Mondlane was a hero of the Mozambican anti-colonial resistance during the 1960s when momentum was building against the Portuguese occupation. He was a leading figure in the liberation movement FRELIMO (now Mozambique’s ruling party) until his assassination in Tanzania, where FRELIMO established its base during the late colonial period. The perpetrator of the killing is not known yet is rumoured to be someone from the Portuguese state security apparatus, which makes a lot of sense based on how desperate the Portuguese were to quell the gathering calls for independence.
