Three cheers for Arth

Today we drove to the Vihren hut at 1900m for the start of our walk to 4 of the Banderishki Lakes in the Pirin Mountains. There was much more snow than last year and we had to cross several snow fields. We reached 2322m.

The early sunshine disappeared and it was an overcast day with clouds on the tops. In the afternoon it rained and then hailed quite heavily. Nothing dampened my pleasure at being able to do the walk. Arth was a bit sore and found the descent tricky, but Wolfgang, our excellent mountain guide, was on hand to help me with the steepest steps down.

We saw gentians, alpine snowbells, saxifrage and carpets of crocuses.

Tonight our meal was cooked by a local schoolteacher and was truly Bulgarian in style: savoury pancakes followed by a sort of Bulgarian Scotch egg with potatoes and then a Baklava style dessert. All delicious.

Internet variable hence posting late.
