Another rainy day

Looking out at the rain, from the garden room window: it's rained very heavily, on and off, all night and all day, with just a few short breaks. During one of these, I put on my wellies and took the collapsed, rotting remains of the pumpkin, which I had ordered for J and her PA to carve on Tuesday, to the compost bin in the orchard. It's not been our week! Lesson: never buy pumpkins online from a supermarket. Normally we have plenty of pumpkins and squashes of our own, but this year we've ended up with nothing: late planting out and the poor summer weather left them with too much catching up to do when the September sun finally arrived.

The small consolation was that I had a quick look at the brassica bed and picked three fairly small but nice looking cauliflowers; there will be plenty more to pick soon. The curly kale is looking good too, and we are already eating cavallo nero and cabbages, so we can look forward to a scurvy-free winter.
