Long day, and almost all went really well. Woke early and did some word puzzles and chat with K before gobbling down a bacon and egg roll and driving down to P’s. Asked him how he felt about the move and was delighted that he said he felt good, and that it would be like going home and to stay with relatives…the pull of a birthplace, family roots and early childhood memories seem strong and certainly mean he was very upbeat.
Ambulance transport arrived earlier than we expected and gave C and K only time for a quick goodbye visit but he was pleased to see them. Packed him into the ambulance in bright sunshine then I hastily put the last few boxes of things into the car and set off.
Straightforward drive, although as we arrived in Yorkshire the rain started! Arrived at the home to find him just about to settle into a lovely big room just to the right of the main door, so I started unpacking. Very busy afternoon followed of unpacking, lots of chats to staff asking him about how he likes everything from his food to showering, activities etc etc. all the staff were so lovely…two or three talked about how they knew his mother when she stayed there, or how their grandparents used to live near her, or etc. He loved being surrounded by all the local accents and memories and I got the photo of her up onto the wall quickly for him to show them. Set up all his familiar equipment and books and etc and he was very pleased with the room, the huge window and the view of the garden and front drive… there will be lots to look at! He loved keeping his door open and all the staff saying hello and offering tea every time they passed.
So, it got to just after 4pm and I said goodbye and went to set off……then the bad stuff started. My car keys were nowhere to be found. To cut a long story short I spent the next two hours emptying the car, his room, the bin, everything to search for them. Staff helped, but none of us could find them. Calls to T and to A to think of options led to them both offering to come and rescue me, and in the end A came, with the spare car and house keys. Bless her….a 7 hour round trip and we got to hers at 2am.
Never found my original keys….I’m sure they’ll eventually turn up somewhere weird but it drove me crazy not to be able to find them, but at least it gave me time to find how to get his TV subtitles turned on and set up his google hub large font clock etc etc.
Arrived at A&N’s and we all went straight to bed…shattered!
