Remembrance Sunday service

Today Gavin and I went to the Remembrance Sunday service at the school where he is chairman of the governors. I always find the service so moving and emotional, especially when they talk about all those school boys who died in the Second World War, many of them not yet 20 years old. This is a memorial to those that died and it is so sad to see these young men's faces in this album. Schools lost so many pupils to the war, boys at 17 or 18 signing up for the war and never coming home again. The novel In Memoriam by Alice Winn describes this so well. I find the hymns quite emotional, and it still feels strange to sing God Save the King!

After the service we had lunch with the headmaster and some other guests which was lovely. While it rained today the rain held off while we were there.

Tonight the last episode of All The Light We Cannot See. It is quite different from the book in many areas, and one wonders why a screen writer finds it necessary to change the plot of a Pulitzer Prize winning book. The actress who plays the blind girl is actually blind and was chosen from amongst a thousand applicants - she has never acted before and has done very well to act in this series.
