Strange Fruit

Our little persimmon tree is so loaded with fruit that we decided to pick a lot of it in order to unweight the branches which were bending to the ground. They are Fuyu persimmons which never get soft, so it is a bit difficult to tell when they are ripe, but these are quite small, not quite the right color and hard as rocks, so I think they have a way to go. There is also a row of them on the windowsill where I'm sure they will ripen eventually. I never really liked persimmons or their squishy texture, but these  Fuyus are really good and look beautiful in green salads with some pomegranate seeds.

There's also a delicata squash, two peppers a plum and some lemons in there.

It's been a quiet day as I had another skin cancer removed from my left ankle this morning. I was a bit non-plussed when she started talking about removing the one my right shin which is still healing from her ministrations of six weeks ago. She looked at it again and decided it was infected and directed me to put vinegar compresses on it. I'm not convinced that it's infected, but I am certainly sick of dealing with it so will do as directed.

The dermatology clinic has just been 'redecorated'  and looks like a train station with black fake leather chairs lined up around the walls and down the center of the waiting room which is now more dismal than ever. I encountered several people with bandages on their faces, meaning that Dr. Peng the Mohs specialist must have been in full cry today.

I'm really not 100% happy with this place as it feels so much like an assembly line. I noticed that the board on the wall in the waiting room indicating which doctors were on time has been abandoned, along with all attempts  at keeping to a schedule. I think about changing, but having done that once, I really don't know what other options there are.

I'm now sitting with my leg up sewing the binding on Will's quilt and watching the approach of the first real rainstorm of the season. Or so they say. Having repeatedly said that there is no longer such a thing as 'fire season', the headline in the paper today said that CalFire was planning to call an end to fire season if this storm shapes up as predicted.

Whatever....
