Optic Fibre Installation

I've been noticing activity in the local streets over the last few days and decided to find out what was going on.  Apparently, this chap is working for BT Openreach, replacing the current copper wire with optical fibre to improve the bandwidth across the estate.

It's interesting that this should be happening a couple of years after Virgin Media installed optic fibre as well, but they cut channels in the pavement, making a right mess in the process.  So much so that there has been little take up amongst neighbours in protest.  For this current upgrade, the cables are being pulled through the conduits that were laid under the pavements when the estate was created, thereby eliminating the need to cut channels.  I am sure it was some form of bureaucracy that prevented Virgin from being able to utilise the existing conduits.

It does mean that we will soon be able to take advantage of higher broadband speeds as the old analogue systems are replaced.
