Empire Building

There aren't many interesting civic buildings downtown where I went today to get a new pair of sneakers.  New buildings were built in the 60's to house the courts and the city hall which I can only describe as brutalist. and brutally ugly. The Empire Building shown here survived an earthquake which destroyed most of the downtown area. It has been redone as a hotel now and is just about the only thing that gives the public square any character. It was catching the light nicely giving it a good low key effect on our last sunny day before the clouds start coming back in.

Putting the groceries away I noticed that somebody had managed to spill heavy cream in the fridge which then leaked down into both vegetable bins. Quite a feat...and quite a feat to clean it out which led to clearing the last of the leftovers, some containers of moldy cottage  cheese and salsa and some really limp lettuce. That led to cleaning the oven which had its own Thanksgiving disasters take place within.

The tire pressure light in our car keeps going on and John keeps putting air in it. He finally got tired of the whole process and took it to the tire place where they found a nail in it and were able to fix it, but he was stranded there until it was finished. Fortunately it's just across the street from Trail House, so I don't think he suffered much.

We watched Nyad last night with Annette Benning and Jodie Foster. It's the story of Diana Nyad's five attempts to swim, when she was 63, from Cuba to Miami...103 miles and two and a half days in the water. But it was also the story of a remarkable friendship without which she couldn't have done it, a fact she finally recognized at the end of the movie. It's probably not the movie to watch before going to bed, but I recommend it.

It's one of those extreme feats that I can barely relate to. I think it's important to challenge ourselves but that was another interesting part of the movie...we all assess the challenges and the risks in different ways.
