Look Out

Chester Market

C and T stayed overnight, and then we travelled to Chester Market to meet up with my sister and family, who were staying with her eldest daughter and partner. Eleven of us in all - I took plenty of photos of family, although this isn’t one of them.

Since the development of Altrincham Market years ago, and its huge success, everywhere has tried to emulate the model. As an article I was reading this morning says, the old idea of a market in the UK (“displays of y-fronts and socks”, not totally fair I know) is out, it’s more about a good eating and drinking venue with lots of different eateries surrounding as well as independent shops selling interesting things. It’s clearly a huge success in Chester, the New Market was really busy. I had avocado and toast, latte coffees, and a glass of English sparkly. The future of the High Street seems to be in leisure and “experience” (whatever that may mean) not primarily retail.
