Mid-Century Parents

Today would've been either my father's 116th birthday, or his 29th; depends on how you want to look at it. He was born on February 29, 1908. On a Leap Year, it was easy enough to celebrate his birthday on the 29th, but for the other years, we kids would plot and argue and wonder what the best day would be to celebrate it: February 28 or March 1. He claimed to not care.
My sister Kathi took this picture in the summer of 1953, using a square shaped Kodak Brownie camera. The photos came back from the drugstore printed on squares of photo paper with scalloped edges. The family was on a picnic at Lake Metigoshe, about 30 miles from our North Dakota farm, and right on the Canadian border Most of the lake is in North Dakota, but part of it is in Manitoba.
Inside the trunk of that 1951 Kaiser, was a picnic table Dad made; a wooden top with legs made of pipes that screwed into place so it could be disassembled. The table top was painted to match the car.
Mom was pregnant with our sister Becky when this picture was taken; Becky was born in December. Kathi died earlier this month at 82, and Becky died in 2018 at 64. I've lost my oldest sister and my youngest, so lots of family pictures have been showing up on our sibling texts and emails.
