Sgwarnog: In the Field

Boing

The heavy rain didn’t dissuade me from a trip across to Huddersfield for some football. I’d usually do that journey by train via Leeds but a combination of the continuing land slip at my end, and engineering at the other end meant the much more direct route of a bus into Bradford and out the other side, and that worked easily enough on the quieter Sunday roads.

It was a noon kick off for the convenience of TV audiences, with Huddersfield Town hosting West Bromwich Albion in a Championship fixture. Town are hovering around the relegation spots while Albion are pushing for a play-off space, so it was a little surprising to find Huddersfield having the best of the first half, and going into the break a goal up. Reality set in during a one-sided second half, with Albion scoring four without reply, which gave the visiting fans plenty of opportunities to deploy their famous Boing Boing celebratory chant.

I do like the architecture of this ground, with the curving stands. And with this view down the pitch you have a glimpse of the gasometer home of the Huddersfield peregrine falcons behind.
