The Light Within

This is a piece of the Larch tree I took down during the storms.
Turning 'wet' wood has its own challenges - the biggest one is avoiding getting soaked  and keeping everything within range staying dry, I have found the worst woods are Pines .... the sap is a nightmare and you can't stand in front of the piece being turned or you end becoming a huge fly paper ... and getting it off your glasses is virtually impossible.
However ..... one of the nice things about wet wood is you can turn it very thinly and it is pretty easy to make sure the wall thickness is even. To do that you turn the inside and then shine a light into it as you turn the outside. So long as the colour remains constant, the thickness is even.

This shot was actually taken while it was still on the lathe (turn it clockwise and that is the orientation it was in) and I hadn't finished the stem and base. The darker areas are caused by different grain orientation.
This is what it looks like now it is off the lathe.

The Ash dish is now waxed.

There was a phone chat with No1 to arrange Bunny's birthday present.
I can't believe it is coming up 5 years - or that she was so ill when she was born. We also arranged for No1 to pick up a blood pressure monitor so he can keep an eye on it (it was an on-line offer ... stupidly cheap ... but he doesn't have a loyalty card for the store to take advantage of it).

The frogs were back again this morning ... but I wasn't going out in the rain to lie for ages to get any pictures.
