Look Out

Beetham Church

My cold had developed fast, so I am having a quiet day.

This is the nearest church, and a very fine one it is too. There are good daffodil displays in the churchyard. Like many old churches it is an amalgam of styles from different periods. For example the lower part of the tower may be pre-Norman, the upper part 16th century (thank you Pevsner).

Everywhere is very wet, with lots of standing water, boggy ground and temporary lakes. I walked to the nearby Heron Corn Mill to look at the River Bela (extra). It is a torrent, and the water cascading over the weir is quite a sight. The image, taken from a footbridge, shows the corn mill on the left and the paper mill on the right. There is a hydro power unit here, which last year produced three times the usual power output. If the rain continues it will be a similar story this year.
