MONO MONDAY

It is Mono Monday and the theme is "cylinder."
~
Recently, I was converting some analog transparencies to digital format.  This one was shot in Hawaii back in '78.  We're on the island of O'ahu and this shot was made on the top of the Pali Overlook on highway H3 (interestingly it's designated as Interstate Highway H3 even though it stays intrastate), looking almost due east at the Village of Kailua.  Looking the opposite way you'll see Honolulu.  Obviously, I converted to B&W.

You'll see a tunnel which looks suspiciously like a cylinder (I know that's a stretch...but I'm allowed) going through the mountain that separates the east side of the island from the west side...actually there's twin tunnels.  One heads east and the other heads west....two-way traffic. The east tunnel is out of sight to the right of this shot.

Just above the tunnel you'll see a diagonal slash which was the original pass over the mountains from Honolulu to the eastern side of the island.  It was hand cut into the mountain lava over many many years by the ancient Hawaiians.
