Holy Trinity

Inspired by today's Wide Wednesday challenge of church or chapel I "hit Google Maps" in search of an interesting looking local church. Holy Trinity Church seemed to fit the bill with Google map images suggesting this was a small country church - it turned out to be rather larger!

Based on the age of the oldest gravestone I was able to decipher, it appears to have been built in the late 1700s / early 1800s.  A poignant corner of the graveyard contained small grave markers headed "Gordon Boy" and the name of a boy mainly around 15 or 16 years old (extra). The church is next to a public school, Gordon's School, which could explain them. However with further research I discovered that the school was originally set up as a National Memorial to British war hero, philanthropist and martyr, Major-General Charles George Gordon (1833-1885), and was founded in 1885 where it began existence as ‘Gordon Boys’ Home’ for necessitous boys.  It didn't formally become a school until 1943. Each monarch since Queen Victoria up to our late Queen Elizabeth II has been its patron, and presumably King Charles II will continue the tradition.
