Sillywrea - the Quiet Corner

Hooray. I managed to walk again today and it was a brilliant day out.

We started at Allenbanks, did a lot of climbing up and down through the woods until we reached Moralee Tarn. We then walked along the roads, over the fields of Sillywrea Farm, climbed to Staward Peel, more woods by the River Allen, up to Beltingham and back down to Allenbanks. Only 8.5 miles but a good work out.

When we arrived at Sillywrea it was nearly lunchtime. The farmer here is called The Last Horseman because this is the last farm in the UK to be worked entirely with horsepower. Here we see the youngest generation of the family with one of the Clydesdales they use. They have 7 horses for the farm.

If you want to learn more there is an excellent video and a book about the farm. Charles Bowden, the author, happened to be on our walk today which was great. There is also a delightful short film accessed here if you would like to see something of the work of the farm. (Warning - contains muck!)

Sepia seemed the only apt choice for the image.
