Lynmouth Harbour

This was the first day of the painting holiday, and my first time doing a full watercolour painting outside en plein air.  Our location for today was the picturesque harbour at Lynmouth.

There are 15 painters, plus a few NPPs (non-painting partners) in the group, so quite a large group of varying levels of experience, so good luck to our tutor, Paul Weaver!  He gave us a demo of how he works  by painting a picture from start to finish, starting with a tonal study … all done in about an hour!  Mine you he was painting in full sun so waiting for the layers to dry was not an issue.

His view was from a park off to the right of the picture with a white pub and the turreted building in my view here (which he considered “simple”) and cliffside in background - always fascinating to watch an artist work.

It was then our go as we spread ourselves round the park choosing a view while trying to find some shade.  I chose to paint the tower, the Rhenish Tower, and harbour walls in the full shade of the pub along with another lady, and wasn’t too displeased with my first attempt (extra).
