Marjorie's ramblings

Did you know?

For many years, our festival walks have been peppered with short stops when one of the team talks about something of interest at that point.

These are usually informative and factual, although they have been known to be fanciful. Who knew about the pineapple fields that used to grow under the Featherstone viaduct or the tribes of Onies* (pronounced Ownies) who used to live in this area?! (Their history has been documented in detail by one of our leaders!)

Today’s walk was called Haway Back to Halty. We took a coach to our starting point, south of Haltwhistle. I have never known such a slow bus ride. The coach stalled because we were going uphill so slowly!

Our walk was 8 miles back to the town. We walked over very rough moorland, which would have been a nightmare in normal weather conditions, but was dry as a bone.

Hazel and Tim were on the walk and I will see them again in Lewis in June.

By all accounts, the festival has been brilliant, so many congratulations to the committee and all the volunteers.

*My apologies that I did not make I clear: the Onies live in the fertile imagination of John J. He gave birth to the legends when his children were small!
