To supper along the Haltwhistle Burn
On our third and final day at the Haltwhistle walking festival, we joined walkingMarj, some of the new friends that we made on Saturday and yesterday, and a couple of others, for a walk entitled 'Howay back to Halty'.
Our day out began with a short ride by coach up into the hills. From here we walked eight miles or so over patches of moor, agricultural land, and a disused railway track. We stopped along the way for Kevin and John to tell us the history of (or stories about) the area. These ranged from accounts of bloodthirsty Border reivers to the ghostly tale of the Grey Man of Bellister Castle. walkingMarj captured Kevin entertaining us all in her blip for today.
Back in Haltwhistle at the pub, we met the others who had just completed today's longer walk along a section of the Pennine Way. Amongst them were two very enthusiastic tandem owners.
As if the organised walk was not sufficient exercise for one day, this evening Mr hazelh and I retraced our steps from yesterday afternoon up the Haltwhistle burn (blipped), back to the Military Road, and along to the Milecastle Inn for supper (again). We only passed a couple of people on the way there and none at all on the way back. The walk home amongst the bluebells and with birdsong accompaniment made for a magical end to our wee holiday in Northumberland.
Exercise today: walking (30,043 steps).
