The Pensioner

Old Rogue

Look at him, all schmooze. And shamefully at his wife’s 80th, too. For we were through to Rhu for Madame La Quirk’s celebrations. And she was looking very well indeed; their three sons were all there and we blethered away for hours I tell you. I struck up a good conversation with young Gavin, motorcyclist and IT wonk from Edinburgh as we were plonked at tables for some considerable time. Hard work these sorts of events when you know next to nobody. I’m an interesting person. You want to talk to me! Anyway, eventually home to read that clever Matthew Syed’s take on Reform’s electoral success which he sees as a general reaction to the overreach of moral universalism. If only I’d read that beforehand I could have made small talk.
