Living my dream

Right side

I have engaged the right side of my brain most of today, and worked on a pile of art cards in the study. It is an occupation which absorbs and refreshes me: so very different from my usual more physical and organised days.

The Blip shows 12 of the small canvases (which will eventually be stuck onto A6 sized card); all of them works in progress.

When I put paint on the brush and start to apply it to the canvas it takes me into a kind of meditative state. Today I have almost completed a handful and developed a few more, and given yet more blank canvases their first brush-strokes.

I don't decide in advance what it will become: I wait to see what turns up with the brush strokes. Then when it has a 'shape' I gradually apply details to clarify the image, usually over a few days.

Sometimes I apply paint for a few minutes on a wee piece of canvas, stand back to look at it carefully and do no more at all. The magic can happen as quickly as that. But with other pieces I can spend days and days working on them until I'm satisfied.

I ran out of cards in early April and had to do some hurried creations for a couple of events, so now I am building up a stockpile again. It is good to have some ready to go at any moment.

It is likely that once I've completed these ones I'll not touch brush and paint for a few months. I am a very intermittent painter.
