When is a bike not a bike…

When it looks like this. Although judging by the Lycra-clad gentleman struggling to get out of it, then perhaps it is.

M and I spent some time in Broadway in the Cotswolds today. We visited the excellent ’Gordon Russell Design Museum’ first thing. Gordon Russell loved the Arts & Crafts style of furniture. However, he designed and developed furniture inspired by this style that could be produced by machine and so make it affordable for more people. This was in the 1920s. Later, the firm suffered financially in the depression but he cleverly joined forces with Murphy Radios and produced beautiful radio cabinets which kept his business going (see extra). After the destruction of WWII his company was there to join the ‘Utility’ initiative to produce affordable furniture that people desperately needed. The museum was hands-on in that we were able to open drawers and cabinets and admire the precise workmanship.

Later, we met M’s daughter and husband for an excellent lunch at The Lygon Arms Hotel which coincidentally used to be owned by Gordon Russell’s father.

Then we visited the chocolate shop…!
