With much gnashing of teeth
It didn't take very long to pull out the front wheel of the Africa fecking Twin to discover that the speedometer cable had seized yesterday, and consequently the metal worm gear sheared all the teeth off the plastic drive gear. Le sigh. I replaced it for the first time only 1000 miles ago, but apparently I didn't buy a new cable at the same time. I unseized the cable with my electric drill and cleaned it all up, but what to do? I put the original gear back in the housing in the hope that it didn't look too badly worn (even though it probably was, because after all I replaced it!) but sure enough, the needle stayed on 0. So I've ordered a new one and will fit it in a few days' time.
I also tried to fiddle with Fidra's idle cable, but it seems to be seized as well, and Honda's designer is very much In My Bad Books. I ran the engine for a while and the idle is not desperately too high, but is higher than I'd like. I've no idea why it's changed, given that if it's seized, it can't have gone out of adjustment from before when it was fine.
By then it was teatime and I was whacked, so tidied up, had a long hot shower and the other half of yesterday's sausage and chips.
I am beginning to see myself calling it a day and buying Darth Biscuit.
