Andy Nicholson
Today's the day . . . . . . . . for the archaeology of the Solway
Back home now - just in time to go to a talk in Dumfries Museum by Andy Nicholson, Dumfries and Galloway County Archaeologist - all about the archaeology of the region.
He gave us a quick chronological romp, from Mesolithic forests through to 20th century salmon nets. On the way, we heard about Late Prehistoric coastal forts and settlements, the Romans, Early Medieval island churches, the Vikings who left their mark in place names - and a whole lot more. It was fascinating stuff and as Andy has been around the region for many years, he has a detailed knowledge of it all.
He was the first Archaeologist to see the Galloway Hoard, found at Balmaclellan some years ago. He knew right away what an important find it was - and was instrumental in ensuring that it was preserved in the best possible condition to enable careful research of its contents to be carried out . . . . . .
