Common Enchantments

The breakfast room

of the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, home of the Seiberling family who co-founded the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.   Stan Hywet is the name chosen for the home by the owners and it is Old English meaning "stone hewn or stone quarry".  It was a Tudor style home like the estates in England.    The house is 64,500 square feet which is the size of an American football field.  Begun in 1913, it was as modern as it could be for its time....23 bathrooms, 18 bedrooms, 23 fireplaces, elevators, and modern amenities such as indoor plumbing, gas, electric, telephone and an internal vacuum system.   It took 2 years to build.   Mr.  Seiberling was known to be very health conscious and he slept most nights on a sleeping porch with windows open.    The Seiberlings were very generous with their wealth and gave to the people of Akron, Ohio in various ways.   Mrs. Seiberling was a trained opera singer so much of the philantrophy was in the arts.

The grounds are beautifully kept with trees and flowers.  We ran out of time to see everything because we spent most of the day at Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

I have included a few other photos of the house and a collage of Cuyahoga Park.    In the park we visited Brandywine Falls, an old train station, walked along a canal trail and visited the beaver pond which was full of flowers (and a heron).    So much to see here but we did not have time for most of it as it is a huge park.

Tomorrow will be the last day of exploring.  Connie has ideas and we won't know until we start out in the morning!!
