Menina 2.0
We had a restful night in our comfortable cabin aboard Brittany Ferries ship, Santona, blessed with calm seas.
Early this morning we saw a few more dolphins and a good number of gannets.
We attended an interesting lecture by Chloe, a marine conservationist with ORCA, who is sailing with us. This afternoon we did a deck watch for cetaceans. The whales still proved elusive but it was very pleasant out on deck 10, chatting to Chloe and other passengers interested in marine life.
Meanwhile, indoors, in the rather exclusive lounge, we found this display of sculptures by the artist Felipao. He has created what he calls "The Menina of the 21st century", in other words, his modern interpretation of Diego Velazquez's famous painting of 1656, called "Las Meninas", featuring King Philip IV of Spain and his wife, Queen Mariana, and their young daughter, the Infanta Margaret Theresa, and various attendants, including two Meninas ( ladies in waiting). Las Meninas
Felipao has used the " lowpoly technique", which involves creating complex 3D objects using a minimal number of polygons. In this example, the sculpture is asymmetrical and uses 448 different facets.
There were about a dozen sculptures, all identical, except for size and finish. Here are three examples displayed on a shelf but there was also a life size one by the entrance door. See extra.
We docked at Portsmouth at 8pm, and had a swift journey back to Winchester by train, arriving home at 10pm, tired, but happy from our adventures.
