On This Day

Hoverfly on bistort

This plant grows all over my back garden. I should probably tame it but I don't. I liked this hoverfly with its 'moustache' abdominal bands. Syrphus ribesii I think.

Another hot day - only 10:00 am and I'm already seeking shade. I know it won't last and it's a symptom of worrying climate change but feeling confident about being outside is so delightful. It has hurried the flowers on though - the bluebells and aquilegia are done. Everything is ahead of the game. I am only watering the vegetables because if we don't get some rain we will have a hosepipe ban I'm sure. There are a lot of insects for the birds to catch but try as I might I can't see butterflies in the garden.

The girls will be here soon. They're bringing an afternoon tea to have at lunchtime. The nine year old asked me on Wednesday what kind of cake I'd like. I've chosen a three layer sponge with raspberry cream and a frosted fruit and chocolate drizzle topping. She was completely confident that she could make this. What a girl. Meanwhile the six year old wants to make a fruit salad when she gets here so we will do that. A fun and carb heavy time ahead.

Hope your Sunday is going well.
