The first visit was to Arkedi Monastery which is one of Crete’s most important monuments and has become a symbol of the Cretan’s struggles for liberation   In 1866 the Cretans revolted against the Turks who had controlled the island for over 200 years and when a room full of gunpowder blew up many people were killed at the monastery. The old tree still has one of the bullets in the trunk.  Later we visited the charming little village of Margarites which is famed for its pottery.  Twice on the way back the bus driver very skilfully reversed for almost a kilometre each time along the steep narrow winding roads, first to avoid a funeral and then parked cars blocking the way.
Extra  The only day that we saw a sunset as much of the time there was cloud which fortunately had kept it cool enough to walk.
