Holiday Weekend
The long awaited May 24th weekend....when everyone heads off to their cottages to open up for the season or to campgrounds with tents or trailers to enjoy BBQ's, fireworks, and of course, to endure those congested roads leading out of or back to the city!
Years ago, I gave up on going north for the May 24th weekend, as along with the joy of the first visit to the cottage and good times with family, come the back flies! Yikes! I hate the black flies! Now, I wait patiently until those little pests are gone. Shortly after that, along come the mosquitoes, but they are easier to live with! I will head north in June.
My "holiday" weekend was pretty normal and uneventful. No fireworks and no sitting traffic on the 400 north. One surprise though was a knock on the door - a visit by my new young neighbours next door with their adorable little girl coming to say hi, and offering me an armload of rhubarb! They are not rhubarb fans, but along with the house came two huge patches in the back yard; they were as delighted to give it away as I was to receive it! My reaction? I hope that this transaction will continue every spring as I love rhubarb! Their response? We have more - we will deliver it tomorrow!
So, part of my afternoon was spent in the kitchen stewing up a whole lot of rhubarb...and thinking that this will provide a blip for me for the day as I had not been out and about with my camera. Then - as I was leaning over the kitchen sink ,washing up after slaving over a hot stove...who should appear out there in a tree overlooking the garden? Mr. Red Tailed Hawk! A much more interesting blip than the rhubarb one I had planned!(extra)
PS: I had a very upsetting evening watching the Toronto Maple Leafs fall apart once again and lose the series! It was really hard to watch, but I forced myself to not turn off the TV in frustration, but to stick with them until the bitter end....and it was indeed a bitter end...one of many they have had over the years.
