Sweet Briar
This morning, I cycled over the golf course to the Weeke suburb of Winchester. I noticed a couple of wild rose shrubs along the way, and stopped to photograph the flowers. Later, I asked the Plantnet App to identify the plant, expecting Rosa canina (dog rose ), but it said it was more likely to be Rosa micrantha (Small- flowered Sweet Briar). The latter doesn't appear in my trusty Fitter and Blamey Wild Flowers book. Reading elsewhere, it seems the sweet briar has fragrant foliage as well as flowers, so I will need to return to check that out, to confirm the ID.
Field Marshal Stormin' Norman reminded me it was World Turtle and Tortoise Day, so I made sure he had a tasty buffet lunch of wild strawberries, buttercup flowers, organic dandelion leaves, a couple of crunchy Sedum leaves, a tender stem of bindweed, and a slice of cucumber. I had hoped to "blip " him but by the time I had got organised, I found he had scoffed the lot, and retreated to bed for a siesta!
There was no sound of chirping from our Great Tit nestbox, today. I think the baby birds must have fledged yesterday while we were out, or else very early this morning. I haven't seen any Great Tits either. I think the parents encourage the babies to move away from the nest site. I hope most of them make it. It's a dangerous life out there for young birds; I know there's a sparrowhawk in the vicinity, as well as domestic cats.
