Fairies and Freaks
I got up far later than I would have liked. I am having real trouble sleeping at the moment as a result of the medication I am on. As a result, Django had a late walk, and since I am away tonight, I wanted it to be a bit longer than usual so that Julian can get away with giving him a very short one in the evening. On the way, I met Florian who is responsible for the Fairy Garden in Penicuik Estate. It started during lockdown, on the other side of the track, then expended to the side where it is now, until someone from the estate asked him to remove the original bit. It is a real labour of love, and now includes offerings from other people. It is totally charming and you don't need to believe in fairies to enjoy it. We chatted for quite a while.
I spent a lot of the day catching up on my diary an various other tasks. In the evening, I went to my friend's Katherine, in Portobello. She was hosting one of her monthly film and food evening, and we watched Freaks, 1932 American film produced and directed by Tod Browning. It is quite a bizarre and unsettling film, but I liked how the so-called freaks were never de-humanised, quite the contrary, and that it was done without any peaching but just by letting them, and their actions speak for themselves.
