Mono Monday: Glass
This morning I was trying to get my book finished for Book Club this afternoon, Sacré Bleu by Christopher Moore, in which he weaves a fantastical “comedy d’art” following the suicide (or was it?) of Vincent Van Gogh, and including various actual Impressionist painters, such as Henri Toulouse Lautrec, Monet, Manet, Gauguin amongst others, as well as fictional characters. It takes place in the art world of late 19th century Paris. I have struggled with it, as I know others in the group have. It jumps around in time and occasionally place, and I found it confusing and definitely rather crude. He had obviously done a great deal of research into the Impressionist artists of the era, and life in Paris at that time - apparently he had even lived there for several years while researching for the book, but it just didn’t work for me. That seemed to be the general view of our Book group too, except for Susan who had suggested it. She and Monique, another member of our group had actually presented it previously to an OLLI class they taught, Osher Lifelong learning Institute - a rough equivalent to U3A, University of the Third Age in the UK. Susan has read other books by the author, but only one other person in our group said they would be likely to read any more by him!
As for my blip, for the Mono Monday theme of Glass, I chose one of our green-stemmed Riesling wine glasses which we bought years ago when we were living in France and visited the region of Alsace, bordering Germany, and having alternated between French and German control over the years.
I have caught up on another couple of back blips, if you care to scroll back and check them out!
